Founded on September 4, 1781, under Spanish governor Felipe de Neve, Los Angeles began as a small farming pueblo. The 44 settlers named it in honor of Our Lady, Queen of the Angels. Built on land long inhabited by the Tongva, the community grew under Spanish, Mexican, and American rule, becoming the diverse city that we know today.
