Founded on February 22, 1911, Van Nuys was developed by the Los Angeles Suburban Homes Company and named for rancher Isaac Newton Van Nuys. A land auction and barbecue welcomed buyers to this new town. Once farmland, the area grew with water from the Los Angeles Aqueduct and joined Los Angeles in 1915, becoming a busy neighborhood.

Van Nuys is important as a civic and commercial hub serving the San Fernando Valley. Its government offices and courts bring public services closer to residents, while its airport supports aviation, business, and local jobs.
